Eli Apple

#13 Eli Apple

POSITION:  Free Safety (FS)

SCHOOL:  Ohio State

HEIGHT:  6-1

WEIGHT:  199

40 Time:  4.40

  • He is projected by most as a CB at the NFL level…but his skills dictate the position move to FS for his best long term success
  • His skills are more suited to play in space where he has opportunity to adjust to plays on the fly
  • There is no question he looks the part when suited up on the field
  • He displays good footwork & ball skills defending the pass
  • Displays good hands on passes thrown in his direction

  • He doesn’t show anything that makes him standout…especially when projecting him at CB
  • He displays bad field awareness and football IQ
  • He is ineffective shedding blockers…along with taking bad pursuit angles to the ball
  • He brings MAJOR tackling concerns to the field…lacking the aggression to initiate first contact with ball carriers…MAJOR RED FLAG
  • Too frequently he hesitates prior to contact as a finesse player…making too many business decisions on the field
  • He lacks the ability to sustain intermediate to downfield pass coverage at CB
  • He relies too much on hand checking throughout pass defense to consider him living up to his projection as a NFL CB

1st Round (Top 20)

Off My Board

  • In my assessment Apple is more of a combine guy than TRUE football player…and why you will find him off my draft board.
